| Varadero
is a peninsula on the north coast of Cuba. It is located about 150
km east of Havana. Varadero means to rest, to repair, to reconstruct.
It is 24 km long and 500 meters wide. The old part of the town is
set up in a North American 1950s style. From 1st to 22nd street
are the restaurants, bars and hotels such as Hotel Kawama and Tortuga.
From 23rd to 64th street are the oldest remains of the original
town.
Varadero was founded on the 5th of December 1887
between two coastlines.
Varadero began to be developed as a summer vacation
resort in the 1940s. Classic hotels from the 50’s are Hotel
Internacional, Villa Tortuga, Hotel Kawama among others.
Many new hotels have been built in the last 20
years. There are about 14000 rooms available in about 60 hotels
and Villas.
Varadero has exceptionally good conditions for
scuba diving, deep-sea fishing, yachting and other water sports.
There are 3 scuba diving centres (Barracuda, Acua y Club Varadero)
with more than 20 diving sites with a rich variety of flora and
fauna , 40 kinds of corals, hundreds of species of fish, lobsters,
shrimps, crabs and turtles, and more than 70 kinds of molluscs.
One of the best diving site in Varadero is “Hoyo Azul Ojo
del Mégano”, a huge 70-meter-wide cave famous for its
underwater walls, coral reefs and schools of multicoloured fish.
